The story

Ola in Soulac-sur-Mer: A Surf-Inspired Mediterranean Kitchen

The surf-inspired kitchen

Ola in Soulac-sur-Mer delivers consistent Mediterranean cooking through the lens of a lifelong surfer. Mélissa Cardenas opened the door to serve post-beach crowds who want honest meals without pretense. She draws inspiration from daily tides and local suppliers to shape a menu that shifts with the season. Guests arrive throughout the day for everything from early morning espresso to late afternoon drinks.

Seasonal coastal plates

The pesco-vegetarian heavy meals anchor the lunch service with ingredients chosen for their natural texture and brightness. A spoonful of smoked eggplant baba ganoush rests alongside tangy pickled onions, while chilled meagre ceviche arrives under a light pepper and coriander infusion. Roasted cherry tomatoes meet cumin-spiced yogurt and a vibrant pistachio pesto for a dish that captures the region’s growing seasons. Finish the meal with a fig tart finished with bright lime zest.

Relaxed seaside atmosphere

Recognition from Le Fooding highlights how the space bridges casual café energy with refined Mediterranean food. Patrons settle onto the sidewalk patio or slip into the second-hand dining room filled with repurposed furniture. A mint green counter anchors the serving area, while vintage French school chairs line the tables. The kitchen applies these same Mediterranean principles to quick takeaway orders, ensuring every bite stays grounded in seasonal ingredients.

Like a few rays of sunshine peaking through the sea spray, surfer Mélissa Cardenas is bringing a little joy to your post-beach meal breaks with her new wave café. And the cool seaside town of Soulac-sur-Mer is taking note! From breakfast through apéro hour, friends pass through and squat the sidewalk patio or the second-hand dining room (a renovated sideboard, a mint green counter, French school chairs) for lunch by the sea. The other day, we had a lovely pesco-vegetarian heavy meal to spice up this Indian summer day: baba ganoush tickled by pickled onions; XXL sobrasada which you spoon onto supernatural bread from the nearby bakery Montréal-sur-Mer; meagre ceviche under a pepper-coriander infusion; roasted cherry tomatoes over a bed of cumin-spiced yogurt with pistachio pesto; before a divine fig tart with lime zest. In a rush to catch your next surf session? The house also serves quick, easy lunches like sandwiches filled with carrots, labneh and sun-dried tomatoes, or the classic combo of terrine and cornichons. // Raymond Boivin
