The story
El Carreter sits on the left side of the old medieval road that once connected Dénia to Ondara – a route that was a Roman way long before. The building stands near the spot where the village of La Xara was founded in the late 19th century. From the terrace and the dining room, the surroundings feel quiet, rural, and deeply tied to the Marina Alta region. The kitchen’s philosophy is stated plainly on the homepage: love for the best products, for the Mediterranean, and for good food. There is always a reason to celebrate good living, they add.
The menu is offered in three lengths, each named to suggest a journey. Senda (60€) is the entry point: aperitivos, three courses, dessert, and petit fours. It is described as a first incursion, enough to understand where the kitchen comes from and what it cooks. Camí de Sabors (90€) extends the route to seven moments – aperitivos, five courses, pre-dessert, dessert, and petits fours – a complete walk through the restaurant’s repertoire. Origen (120€) is the chef’s menu, beginning with local salt-cured fish (salazones) and unfolding over nine services: aperitivos, five emblematic courses that change with the season and the market, pre-dessert, two desserts, and petits fours. The kitchen does not announce what the five courses will be; the menu represents the cooking of El Carreter at that very moment.
The cuisine is modern, but the ingredients speak of the immediate territory – the coast, the market gardens, the mountains behind. The restaurant emphasises that the menus are built around what is best right now, not a fixed script.
El Carreter holds a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, a recognition that aligns with its careful, product-driven cooking and the clear sense of place that runs through every dish. The setting, the service, and the food all point in the same direction: a kitchen that trusts the Mediterranean and the people who grow and catch its ingredients.
