The story
On the Paseo Colón, just steps from the Kursaal Congress Centre, Ikaitz offers a dining experience rooted in Basque tradition and lifted by a modern sensibility. The restaurant, which holds a Michelin Recommended distinction, occupies a welcoming dining room that seats 55 guests — a space that feels both spacious and intimate, suitable for quiet dinners, private parties, and catered events alike.
The kitchen is led by chef Gustavo Ficoseco, whose path to San Sebastián began at the École de Cuisine Paul Bocuse in Lyon and continued through several prestigious restaurants before bringing him here. His philosophy is simple: “When cooking becomes passion, it transforms into art.” That belief shows in the careful balance of his cooking — familiar Basque ingredients treated with technique and respect.
The menu changes with the seasons, but the style remains constant: clean, honest cooking that lets the quality of the product speak. Diners can choose from the daily menu (offered Wednesday through Friday at lunch, priced at 32€) or explore the à la carte selections, which include refined versions of Basque classics.
Among the dishes that have earned Ikaitz its reputation are a supremely tender bacalao (salt cod) served over a creamy piquillo pepper sauce, and an Ibérico solomillo braised in Oporto with a silky potato cream. For those who want to share, the group menus are particularly generous: the Menu III, for example, features Ibérico bellota ham, grilled fresh foie gras on caramelised pineapple, txipirones (baby squid) in a classic Pelaio-style vinaigrette, and a beef sirloin with a creamy wild mushroom sauce. Desserts keep to the same high standard — the cheesecake with red fruits and the dark chocolate millefeuille with a shot of vanilla cream are both worth saving room for.
Ikaitz is more than a restaurant. It also hosts special evening events that blend gastronomy with live entertainment — magic shows, monologues, live music — as well as active cooking classes where no experience is required. The space is wheelchair accessible, and the atmosphere throughout is refined but unpretentious, with service that guests consistently describe as warm, professional, and attentive.
Whether you come for a leisurely lunch of traditional Basque dishes with a modern twist, or for a celebratory dinner that lingers into the evening, Ikaitz delivers the kind of cooking that makes San Sebastián one of the great food cities of the world.
