The story
In the green Valle de Agaete, on the northern slopes of Gran Canaria, Casa Romántica sits among coffee plantations that produce some of the world’s most northerly-grown beans. The restaurant, inspired by Víctor Lugo and his family, is driven in the kitchen by chef Aridani Alonso, named Best Chef of Canarias 2024 by Guía Qué Bueno Canarias. His cooking is an interpretation of Canarian cuisine – modern, precise, and rooted in the island’s larder.
Alonso, who took over the project in 2022, was already recognised as an emerging talent in the new Canarian cooking scene. His work here earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, and the restaurant also holds a Repsol Sun. The setting – a restored house with outdoor seating – overlooks the valley, a landscape of terraced gardens and volcanic slopes.
The menu is exclusively tasting format, with four options. The Tomás Morales (€67) and Alonso Quesada (€79) menus move through dishes like citrus-cured tuna with guava escabeche, octopus with sweet potato and mojos, wreckfish with pickled carrot and pil-pil, and suckling pig. The longer Leonor Ramos de Armas (€95, by 24-hour reservation) adds scarlet shrimp with béarnaise and a pre-dessert of almond, orange and caramel. There is also a vegetarian Tamadaba menu (€60), featuring roasted avocado, seasonal vegetables, and a cannelloni of vegetarian ragù with Gran Canaria cheese sauce. Each menu closes with chocolate, carob, and coffee from the Agaete valley.
Wine pairings are offered, including a Canary Islands-focused option. The restaurant is open Thursday to Monday for lunch, with a terrace service. It will be closed from 12 May to 15 July 2026 for renovations.
