The story
On the plaza of Puerto de Vega, a small fishing port in Asturias, Mesón el Centro has built a reputation for honest, flavour-driven cooking. The restaurant’s own words capture its essence: “Mar y sabor” – sea and flavour. Here, tradition meets a quiet confidence in the kitchen, earning the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026.
The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious, with outdoor seating for warm days and air-conditioned comfort inside. Table service is attentive without being formal, making it a natural choice for both a celebratory dinner and a relaxed meal.
The kitchen focuses on Asturian cuisine, drawing on the region’s rich coastline and inland produce. While the à la carte offers fish, meat, and desserts, the tasting menu “El Centro” (€56) is the clearest expression of the chef’s ambition. It begins with a sequence of aperitivos: a bright salpicón of monkfish, carpaccio of red shrimp, scallop in its own juices, grilled octopus, and squid noodles. A pani puri filled with spider crab adds a playful touch, followed by bacalao (salt cod) and a homemade dessert.
Each dish is described with restraint – the ingredients speak for themselves. The menu is served only at lunch until 15:00, and the whole table (maximum six guests) must participate. Wine is not included, allowing diners to choose from the restaurant’s curated list.
Mesón El Centro describes itself as a “rincón gastronómico” – a gastronomic corner – where the essence of Asturian cooking is celebrated with fresh, authentic ingredients. The restaurant’s story is tied to the sea that shapes its menu, and the team’s commitment to quality is evident in every detail. Whether you come for the tasting menu or a simple plate of grilled fish, you’ll find a kitchen that respects its roots while embracing subtle innovation.
