The story
On a corner of Palma’s lively Plaça Raimundo Clar, La Vieja brings the flavours of the Canary Islands to Mallorca. Chef Jonay Hernández spent years shaping this project, first by digging into the roots of his childhood memories, then by designing every detail of the space—from the open kitchen counter to the graffiti on the walls. The restaurant opened on 3 May 2018, and its recognition by the Michelin guide as a Recommended restaurant confirms what regulars already know: this is a place where personal vision meets real skill.
The cooking is an honest conversation between Hernández’s Canarian heritage and the quality of Balearic produce. You will find the familiar, comforting tastes of mojo picón and wrinkled potatoes (papas arrugadas) sitting alongside locally sourced ingredients from Mallorca. The menu changes with the seasons, but the approach remains constant: traditional recipes treated with modern techniques and a clear, unfussy hand. A daily menu offers a practical way to explore this style, while weekly chef’s suggestions give regulars something new to discover.
Beyond the plates, La Vieja is a complete experience. The cocktail list pays homage to the archipelago with artisanal drinks that use tropical notes and island aromas, and the wine selection has been carefully chosen to match the food, balancing local Balearic bottles with international labels. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a bar counter that puts you close to the action and outdoor seating that lets you soak up the square’s energy.
This is European cuisine with a strong sense of place—neither fussy nor formal, but driven by a chef’s genuine attachment to his origins. La Vieja is a restaurant that knows exactly what it wants to be, and delivers it with warmth and precision.
