The story

Voramar in Portbou – Contemporary Michelin-Starred Restaurant on the Costa Brava

Voramar: a terrace that became a destination

More than thirty years ago, Voramar began as a seafront terrace in Portbou, built on three principles that still guide the kitchen today: excellence of the product, attention to detail, and the influence of the landscape. Located on the northern edge of Cap de Creus, between the Albera mountains and the Mediterranean, the restaurant draws directly from this privileged setting. As the team puts it, they use local products, draw inspiration from the surroundings, and are unafraid to go further—inland for the best meat, across the peninsula for great wines, across an ocean for the finest cacao.

Technique, patience, and meticulousness

In the kitchen, the approach is defined by three fundamental ingredients: technique, patience, and meticulousness. The dining room, led by sommelier and head of service Míriam, aims for a warm, attentive atmosphere from the moment guests sit down. The wine list, curated by Míriam and her team, offers 250 references from over a hundred cellars across Spain—from biodynamic reds made nearby to complex whites and rosés that evolve with the seasons.

Tasting menus shaped by the market

Voramar offers two tasting menus, Gran Voramar and Petit Voramar, both served as full-table experiences. They begin with a sequence of small bites—olive, chips, cockle, pickled mussel, potato tortilla, croqueta, and sangria—then move into a "Mar" course of rock fish, starfish, and Cap de Creus octopus. From there, dishes change with the market: a fritter of spider crab with ibérico bacon, black garlic, and sobrassada; white prawn with carrot, leek, and seaweed; Duroc pork loin with pistachios, pumpkin seeds, and capers; scallop with Xixona nougat; line-caught fish with pea velouté and shellfish bisque; and free-range Label Rouge chicken with courgette and flowers. Desserts include a playful oyster-themed sweet and a selection called La Caixa Dolça. Menus are adapted to the freshest seasonal produce, and the kitchen cannot accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or certain allergy modifications—a sign of the precision behind each plate.

Recognition and consistency

This dedication earned Voramar a Michelin star, a recognition of high-quality cooking that aligns with the restaurant’s long-standing principles. In a town where the sea meets the mountain, the kitchen continues to evolve, staying true to the essence that first drew diners to that terrace decades ago.
