The story
Phra Nakhon brings authentic Thai cuisine to the Limmatpromenade in Baden, housed in a historic building that once served as Switzerland’s secret capital. The restaurant’s name, meaning “old great capital,” nods to both this local history and the owners’ connection to Thailand.
Joy and David Tschümperlin met on a trip to Thailand and spent years dreaming of opening their own restaurant. When they discovered the former “Goldener Schlüssel” location, they seized the opportunity. After months of renovation, Phra Nakhon opened its doors in December 2022.
Joy, born in Thailand and trained in her family’s restaurant business, is the creative force in the kitchen. She brings genuine Thai flavours to every dish, focusing on highest quality ingredients and careful presentation. David, an experienced restaurant manager and former head chef, leads the front of house and curates the wine list.
The restaurant’s motto is “Good Food. Good Life.” Guests describe the atmosphere as warm and the service as attentive and engaged. The interiors are elegant, with outdoor seating available in the Thai Garden when weather permits. Dishes are available in varying levels of spiciness, and repeat guests praise the accuracy of the flavours — one Thai family noted the Tom Yum tastes just like home. The team, including Sous Chef Mew, ensures the kitchen maintains its high standards.
Phra Nakhon earned a Michelin Recommended distinction, a reflection of its commitment to authentic Thai cooking in Switzerland.
