The story
Set in a former gardener’s house within the Läublinpark, Café GUPI occupies a piece of history once reserved as a summer residence for Basel’s industrialist families. Many original features from the 1920s have been preserved, giving the space a familiar, unhurried feel – a place where you can return as if coming home. The address is technically Weil am Rhein, but the restaurant sits at the crossroads of three countries: Germany, Switzerland, and France. Those borderland influences are not subtle – they are the foundation of the cooking here.
Chef Christoph leads the kitchen with an instinctive, product-driven approach. The menu changes regularly, determined entirely by what local growers and producers offer in any given season. This is a kitchen that celebrates the region’s bounty: fruit from nearby orchards, grapes from the surrounding vineyards, and vegetables at their peak. Guests can choose between a three- or five-course menu, each dish bearing the chef’s clear handprint. There is no rigid script – the cooking is authentic, direct, and responsive to the ingredients at hand.
The wine list mirrors that philosophy. It draws heavily on local Gutedel and Pinot varieties, alongside a rotating selection of bottles from other compelling regions. Many of the winemakers are known personally to the team, and their craft – organic, small-scale, hands-on – is represented in every glass. By-the-glass options change frequently, and each course comes with a thoughtful wine pairing recommendation.
Downstairs, a bar and dining room seat twelve; upstairs, a separate room accommodates fourteen and includes a small library. In warmer months, the terrace opens with thirty sunny spots. The atmosphere throughout is intimate and relaxed – the kind of place where you can settle in at the bar for a spontaneous glass or commit to the full tasting experience.
Michelin has recognised Café GUPI with a recommendation, a nod to the clarity of Chef Christoph’s contemporary, seasonal cooking and the care evident in every detail.
A private dining room is available for groups up to fourteen. Reservations are accepted only for the multi-course menu; the bar remains open for walk-ins.
