The story

Sternen Wangen bei Dübendorf: Michelin Star & Contemporary Swiss Cuisine

The Brunner legacy

At Gasthof Sternen in Wangen bei Dübendorf, contemporary Swiss cuisine meets generations of family hospitality. Bettina and Matthias Brunner discovered their shared passion for cooking while working at Daniel Bumann’s famous La Punt estate, and they brought that partnership back to take over this historic inn in 2001. Their rigorous training across Lucerne, Lausanne, and Crissier grounds their approach in disciplined technique. That commitment earned them a Michelin star alongside fifteen points from Gault Millau.

Vaulted stone and timber

Guests choose between two distinct rooms, each carrying its own rhythm. The Badstube sits inside a historic vault that once housed baths and coal storage, now framing a refined tasting menu. Oak floors creak beneath walnut tables in the adjacent Gaststube, where lighter bistro plates share space with traditional favourites. Both spaces maintain a steady flow of locals who appreciate straightforward service and genuine warmth.

Seasonal plates and crisp whites

The Mediterranean influence surfaces through careful layering of acid and texture rather than heavy spice. A ceviche of local pike perch arrives with toasted onion crunch and delicate cucumber slices, while grilled salmon rests on angelhair pasta with fennel from nearby farms. This Swiss cooking style treats regional produce with quiet precision, letting ingredients speak over simple reductions. The cellar highlights well chosen Swiss vineyards to complement every course.
