The story
In the heart of Bern's old town, at Münstergasse 39, ZOE has established itself as a destination for modern, vegetarian fine dining. The kitchen places vegetables firmly in the spotlight, crafting dishes from seasonal and regional ingredients with handcrafted precision. This commitment to plant-based cuisine at the highest level has earned ZOE a Michelin star, as well as the green Michelin star for its dedication to ecological and social sustainability.
The restaurant's philosophy is built on respect for resources, holistic thinking, and conscious decisions in the kitchen, service, and collaboration. ZOE describes itself as a "Kreativzone und Ideenschmiede" — a creative zone and ideas forge — where surprise and trust are part of the experience.
In the evening, ZOE offers a multi-course vegetarian fine dining experience. Instead of listing individual dishes, the menu is structured around three paths: "Discover," "Essence," and "Journey." These menus vary in length and intensity and are revealed only at the table, changing seasonally to reflect the kitchen's interpretation of modern, sustainable gastronomy. All menus are vegetarian and can be prepared vegan upon request with advance notice.
At lunchtime, the restaurant serves a vegetarian business lunch and multi-course gourmet menus, offering the same care and creativity in a more efficient format. The beverage philosophy mirrors the kitchen's approach: regional or house-made. Guests can choose from a curated drink pairing, available with or without alcohol, or select from a wine list designed to complement the vegetarian cuisine.
The atmosphere at ZOE is described as casual and modern, without formalities or white tablecloths. The team, led by host Chantal, works in a family-like environment with flat hierarchies. As Chantal notes, "Top gastronomy doesn't have to be formal." The restaurant's concept of modern cuisine aims to show that fine dining can be fun, accessible, and sustainable.
ZOE also hosts events and private parties, and offers an experience called "Souvenir de Berne," a multi-hour event described as a table becoming a stage. The restaurant is located in the Münstergasse, easily accessible on foot or by public transport, and features outdoor seating, a private room, and wheelchair access.
