The story
The Stadthaus Burgdorf occupies a building with deep roots in Swiss history. Originally the town hall, built between 1745 and 1750, it stands on the site of an inn dating back to 1376. Known as the "Rütli of the Canton of Bern," the building was where the Schnell brothers drafted the first democratic constitution of Bern around 1830. After a renovation in 1998, it now offers 18 rooms and a dining experience that blends heritage with modern hospitality.
The restaurant within the Stadthaus, La Pendule, focuses on "natural dishes and changing gourmet menus." The cuisine is seasonal and international, reflecting the best available ingredients. A sample daily menu from June includes a Swiss beef tartare "Toscana" with olives and sun-dried tomatoes, alongside a creamy white wine soup and a chicken stroganoff with butter noodles. The approach is straightforward: carefully sourced ingredients, prepared with skill, served in a relaxed yet refined setting.
The Michelin guide awarded the Stadthaus a Bib Gourmand, recognizing its "good quality, good value cooking." This aligns with the restaurant's philosophy of offering a high standard without pretension. Whether you're visiting for a weekday lunch (the daily menu is served Monday to Friday from 11:30 to 14:00) or an evening gourmet menu, the experience is consistent: attentive service, a welcoming atmosphere, and food that delivers.
Host Marvin Portmann and his team emphasize "the genuine endeavor for the well-being of our guests." The Stadthaus aims to be a "unique 4* Bijou Hotel" with a historical ambiance, furnished with Louis XVI, Empire, and Biedermeier pieces, Persian carpets, and antique mirrors. The dining rooms include the elegant La Pendule, the casual Stadtcafé, and a leafy terrace for warmer months. It's a place where history and modern comfort meet, and where the food is the highlight.
