The story
In the heart of Fribourg, La Cène offers a refined take on modern cuisine, driven by seasonal ingredients and the instinctive hand of Chef Mohamed Azeroual. The restaurant’s subtle, elegant décor is anchored by a central skylight that floods the dining room with natural light, creating a setting that feels both intimate and airy.
Chef Azeroual’s path to the kitchen began in childhood, shaped by the aromas of his mother’s cooking — orange blossom, toasted sesame, olive oil. Born in Savoie to Moroccan origins, he describes his cooking as instinctive and balanced, with gentle spices and bright, acidic notes. Since becoming chef in January 2016, he and his team have focused on fresh, seasonal produce, offering guests a menu that evolves with the market. The restaurant’s “Suggestions du Chef” are served at both lunch and dinner, and two tasting menus — L’Inspiration De La Semaine and Éclosion Des Sens — allow diners to experience the full range of his approach.
La Cène has earned a Michelin Recommended designation, a recognition that speaks to the consistency and quality of its seasonal cuisine. The restaurant also hosts monthly themed evenings, including wine-pairing dinners and an Italian-inspired “accords mets&vins” event. On Thursdays, an afterwork formula pairs two glasses of wine with a plate of tapas for a casual, affordable introduction to the kitchen’s style.
Private dining is available for celebrations or business events, and the team can arrange bespoke wine tastings. The atmosphere remains welcoming throughout — whether for a quick lunch or a leisurely evening, the focus is on memorable cooking, not pretense.
