The story
In a lively street in Geneva, Matière brings together friends who share a love for good food, good wine, and genuine hospitality. The name itself speaks to their philosophy: matter is the substance of everything – the ingredients, the touch, the visual, the aroma. Here, the experience engages all five senses and tells a story.
Chef Freddy Garanjoud draws inspiration from the local terroir to create a modern, inventive take on Classic French cuisine that is firmly seasonal. The menu changes with the seasons and market arrivals. At lunch, a three-course formula offers a refined yet accessible entry point. À la carte, dishes such as cauliflower with saté and gremolata, or pork with cabbage and harissa, showcase precise technique and clean flavours. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available on request.
Sommelier Lionel Schneider curates a dynamic cellar with independent producers and authentic terroirs. The wine list, which earned the Star Wine List award for Best Medium-Sized List of the Year Switzerland 2025, offers dozens of references by the glass and bottle – from Geneva’s own Domaine de la Mermière to classic Burgundies and beyond. The team’s enthusiasm for pairing is contagious.
The Michelin guide describes Matière as “a lively, sincere and generous table,” while Gault&Millau awards 14/20 for “precise, local and seasonal cuisine.” The dining room, led by Marion Ollivier, is warm and convivial, where good humour spreads from the kitchen to every guest. Whether you choose the “Surprise” menu or order from the carte, the focus remains on honest, seasonal cooking shared among friends.
