The story
In the small village of Tegna, just a few kilometres from Locarno and Ascona, Alla Cantina occupies a historic house on the main square. The building has been a restaurant since 1923 – originally called “all’America” – and was renamed for its communal cellars in the 1950s. After a renovation in 2010, it now houses both the restaurant and guest rooms, retaining the understated charm of a Ticinese rustico.
The kitchen tells a story of two places. As the restaurant puts it, “one day Switzerland ate together with Sicily. They got along so well, despite their differences, that they decided to love all the creatures of the universe.” The menu follows that same path: it begins with the traditions of the Ticino valleys and travels south to the eclectic cooking of Sicily. The result is classic cuisine with a clear Sicilian accent – a journey of carefully selected ingredients that change with each course.
Alla Cantina holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that recognises good quality cooking at a reasonable price. It is a fitting nod to a restaurant that balances substance with a warm, unpretentious atmosphere. Diners can eat on the outdoor terrace in good weather, and the restaurant is wheelchair accessible.
The menu and wine list are available to download from the restaurant’s site, though reservations are taken by phone only. Open Tuesday through Sunday, with a lunch and dinner service, Alla Cantina is a genuine stop for anyone exploring the region – whether for a meal or an overnight stay.
