The story

Grotto Valmaggese, Locarno: Bib Gourmand Italian in a Ticino Grotto

A Grotta in the Rock

Above the clear waters of the Maggia river, set among flowers and mountain quiet, Grotto Valmaggese is carved directly into the rock of Avegno. This is not a restaurant built on the landscape—it is of it. The natural stone walls, the palm trees, the silence of the valley: everything slows down the moment you step inside.

Tommaso and Maria built this grotto from a shared vision of hospitality. Maria’s warmth still shapes the atmosphere—every detail, every guest is met with genuine care. The kitchen reflects that same spirit. Drawing on fresh, local Ticino produce and the traditions of Tommaso’s Neapolitan roots, the cooking here is simple, flavourful, and honest. Expect classic Italian cuisine driven by the seasons, prepared without fuss. The result has earned Grotto Valmaggese a Michelin Bib Gourmand, awarded for good quality, good value cooking—a recognition that speaks directly to what this place does best.

The dining room itself is also a gallery. For years, the grotto has displayed the works of local artist Guido Caminada. His sculptures and paintings—in bronze, iron, stone, and wood—are embedded in the experience, each piece as unique as the setting.

Seating is available outdoors, and the grotto is open for dinner and lunch, with takeaway also offered. Reservations are by phone only.

To sit at Grotto Valmaggese is to take the time to be together. That is the invitation: a meal, a valley, a moment of real connection.

A shady garden beneath ancient chestnut trees, a cozy dining room, elegantly set tables, and a chef in Tommaso Cacciapuoti who skillfully serves his interpretations of Ticino classics: no wonder the «Valmaggese» ranks among the most popular grottos in the Locarno region. Traditionally, the meal began with raw ham from Alpe Piora and Büscion fresh cheese. The herb-crusted lamb fillet was masterfully served alongside a torta di pane. Other choices: beef fillet with goose liver and a silky risotto made with organic cheese and peppers from the Valle Maggia. A classic brasato with polenta. The «Guancette di maialino» – suckling pig cheeks with lemon mashed potatoes. Or, as an evergreen favorite, ravioli del plin with three kinds of roast filling and parmesan foam. A mango semifreddo with chocolate sauce brings the meal to a delicate close.
