The story
Perched above the lake in the tiny medieval village of Vico Morcote, La Sorgente occupies a 17th-century stone house. Inside, two intimate dining rooms open onto a panoramic terrace that looks out over Lake Lugano. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, with a sense of history that frames the meal without overwhelming it.
Chef Francesco Sangalli, together with Jimmy Cannizzaro, leads a kitchen that avoids "troppi trucchi o effetti speciali" – too many tricks or special effects. Instead, the cooking is built on the search for quality ingredients from small local producers, enhanced by precise techniques: live fire, charcoal grilling, and smoking. The result is direct, focused cooking that lets the product speak.
This approach has earned La Sorgente a Michelin recommendation, a quiet nod to the kind of thoughtful, terroir-driven work happening here. The menu changes with the seasons, following the rhythm of what is available from the land and the lake.
The à la carte starts with antipasti like a lake ceviche with watermelon and anchovies, or a beef tartare with a slightly spicy BBQ sauce and stracciatella from the local dairy. Primi include a risotto with Terreni alla Maggia rice, or an open raviolo with white veal ragù and fig-leaf oil. Secondi feature Swiss Black Angus picanha cooked over fire, or grilled char with beurre blanc and summer vegetables. A vegetarian option – roasted eggplant with tofu cream and mozzarella – is always present.
For those who want to taste more, there are tasting menus: a three-course (without dessert) or a four-course, plus a seven-course chef’s journey. Vegan and vegetarian adaptations are available on request.
La Sorgente is part of the Tenuta Castello di Morcote, a family winery that farms organically. The wine list, curated by sommelier Giulia Pozzoli Bernasconi, features over 150 labels, including their own estate bottlings. A short walk from the restaurant, a dedicated wine cellar in the historic village center offers a space to discover these selections.
This is a restaurant that feels personal – a small operation with a large spirit, rooted in the landscape of Ticino. The service is attentive without formality, and the terrace is the kind of place where a long evening over a bottle of wine feels entirely natural.
