The story
In the village of Messen, at the foot of a historic church tower, the centuries-old Restaurant zum Löwen has reinvented itself. Since 2024, the Ingold family has run the property, splitting it into two distinct dining experiences. The Löwen Brasserie serves seasonal market cuisine for lunch and à la carte dinners, while Löwen Gourmet is something else entirely: a tiny, focused fine-dining room that seats a maximum of ten guests.
Löwen Gourmet is open just three to four evenings per week. Patron and chef Jonas Ingold offers a single, exclusive eight-course tasting menu built on clear, personal cooking. “I cook the way I like it myself,” he says. The menu changes with the seasons, drawing on regional ingredients from the surrounding Mittelland. The restaurant has earned a Michelin recommendation as well as 16 points from Gault&Millau, which praised Ingold’s ability to leave no culinary wishes unfulfilled.
The Löwen has stood in Messen since 1822, a traditional half-timbered building that has welcomed guests for over 150 years. It sits quietly in the heart of the countryside, within easy reach of Bern, Biel, Solothurn, and Burgdorf, yet feels a world apart. The contemporary cuisine served here is a fresh chapter in a long story of hospitality.
