The story
Just north of Schaffhausen, in the village of Wiechs am Randen, the Gasthof zur Sonne is run by chef Egbert Tribelhorn and his wife Rosana. Egbert Tribelhorn works alone in the kitchen, keeping the menu deliberately focused. He describes his style as a “surprisingly delicious symbiosis” of Ticino traditions and Swabian classics, with gutbürgerliche dishes often refined “à la provençale” and house-made specialties finished with Mediterranean spices. The result is a form of country cooking that feels both rooted and fresh.
The foundation of his cooking is produce from local farms and vegetables and herbs from the restaurant’s own garden. The short menu changes with the seasons and includes lamb, game, fish, and vegetables. Daily recommendations add variety. Dishes we see on the current card include Carpaccio from sashimi tuna with wasabi ice, Taglierini with giant prawns and chili, and Rinderfilet “Stroganoff” with port wine sauce and serviettenknödel. The “Sonnen Menü” – a four-course set – offers a complete experience of Tribelhorn’s cooking.
The Gasthof zur Sonne earned a Bib Gourmand in the 2025 Michelin Guide, an award that recognises good quality, good value cooking. The restaurant’s own website happily notes the recognition, and it fits the ethos: honest, skilful cooking without pretension.
The sunny dining room and outdoor terrace offer a welcoming setting for a meal. The restaurant can host private events, and there are three guest rooms upstairs for those who want to stay overnight. The wine list is worth exploring, and the kitchen takes allergies and intolerances seriously – all dishes are made without additives or flavour enhancers.
Whether you come for a classic Wiechser Zwiebelroastbraten or a plate of house-made ravioli, the Gasthof zur Sonne delivers a taste of the sunny south in a genuinely warm setting.
