The story

OX'n Schenkon – Modern Seasonal Cuisine in Schenkon, Switzerland | Michelin Recommended

In the small Lucerne village of Schenkon, the team at OX'n has built a restaurant that feels both ambitious and genuinely welcoming. The kitchen, led by chef and co-owner Sebastian Rensing, focuses on modern cuisine built from Swiss products, much of it sourced directly from the surrounding region.

The atmosphere is straightforward: high-level gastronomy without pretension. The young, dynamic team describes their approach as "unique, but always cozy and uncomplicated." That balance has earned OX'n a Michelin Recommended distinction, a nod to the consistent quality found on the plate.

Dinner is the main event. On Fridays and Saturdays, the kitchen presents a surprise menu — a creative composition of dishes made from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Guests can choose a meat-and-fish version or a vegetarian alternative. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, a à la carte menu is also available. For lunch, served Wednesday through Saturday, the team offers a quicker surprise menu alongside à la carte options.

OX'n is a family affair. Sebastian runs the kitchen alongside sous-chef Tino, while his wife Katharina leads the front of house and serves as sommelière. Together, they have created a restaurant that feels personal. The space can also be reserved for private events, from business dinners to weddings.

A small bar serves good coffee, after-work beers, and OX'n cocktail specials. The restaurant is closed Sunday through Tuesday.

In Schenkon, a village in the rapidly growing Sursee region, there is room for an unconventional establishment like the OX’n alongside traditional country inns. Here, chef Sebi Rensing and his young team serve sophisticated fine dining in a modern building with a relaxed atmosphere. The menu began brilliantly with homemade herb bread and several tartelettes, lightly and refreshingly filled with goat cheese, chicory, and yogurt. The exciting parsnip panna cotta with wild garlic broth and fried onions was outstanding. The meat and fish courses were truly spectacular: the juicy Appenzeller duck breast with spicy tree nuts, spring onions, and a deep, rich jus; the flavorful minced trout cakes from Entlebuch; and the duo of shoulder from a Central Swiss calf (grilled and pulled) served with savoy cabbage and spicy mushrooms. The finale was equally skillfully executed, featuring a chocolate sorbet with an inventive miso praline and passion fruit jelly. A competently curated wine list features several high-profile crus.
