The story
A forty-minute walk from the village center of Zermatt, a cluster of 350-year-old chalets holds one of the Alps' most genuine dining experiences. Zum See is a family affair, run by Markus and Marion Mennig, who carry the tradition started four decades ago by Max and Greti. The setting is intimate and unhurried, with outdoor seating that lets the mountain quiet settle around you as you eat.
The kitchen is led by Chef Adelino Martins Pinto, who works from a small space to produce what the restaurant describes as "alpine and Mediterranean masterpieces." The menu changes with the seasons, but the focus remains on fresh, honest cooking: homemade pasta, delicate sweetbreads, and fresh fish like sea bass. The legendary mille-feuille has become a signature closer.
The wine list, curated with over 40 selections, leans heavily on Swiss winemakers, with French and Italian classics as supporting players. It rotates with the seasons, keeping the pairings fresh.
Zum See operates on a seasonal schedule. The 2026 summer season runs from June 19 to October 4, with daily lunch service from 12:00 to 17:00. The winter season begins December 4, 2026, and runs through April 18, 2027. Private events are available by request.
This is a place that earned its Michelin Recommended status through consistency and a clear sense of place. The International and Swiss cuisines are not a fusion gimmick here—they are a natural expression of the mountains meeting the Mediterranean, served in a hamlet that has stood for centuries.
