Sala of Tokyo – Essential Japanese Cuisine in Zürich

Sala of Tokyo brings a focused Japanese dining experience to Zürich's Schützengasse. With its Michelin Recommended status earned in 2026, the restaurant has quickly established itself as a destination for those seeking authentic flavors in a refined, approachable setting.

The space is designed around two seating options that shape the experience. A counter overlooks the open kitchen, allowing guests to observe the precision and care behind each dish. For warmer months, an outdoor terrace offers an al fresco alternative, making it suitable for both intimate meals and relaxed gatherings.

The menu centers on Japanese cuisine, interpreted with respect for tradition and a sensitivity to seasonality. While the specific dishes change to reflect what is freshest, the kitchen's approach is consistent: clean flavors, careful technique, and an emphasis on quality ingredients. The counter seating is particularly suited to those who want to watch the craft unfold—each course arrives with the quiet deliberation that defines this style of cooking.

Sala of Tokyo's Michelin recognition speaks to its consistency and the skill of its team. For visitors to Zürich or locals looking for a Japanese meal that does not overreach, it offers a straightforward, excellent option. The address is central, just off Bahnhofstrasse, making it an easy stop for lunch or dinner.

Whether you sit at the counter or outside, the experience is the same: focused, unpretentious, and deeply satisfying. Sala of Tokyo proves that sometimes the best dining is the simplest, done exceptionally well.

The «Sala of Tokyo» next to Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's oldest and most well-known Japanese restaurant. Owner Lorenz Muster has long impressed with his classic, authentic Japanese cuisine served to a high standard. The extensive menu features a wide selection of sushi and numerous dishes designed for sharing. Thanks to the magical concept of «Kaiseki», even casual diners can discover the many facets of this refined culinary tradition. The appetizers, such as the egg custard with silken tofu and caviar, wagyu with ginger, and crab with spinach, are elegantly plated and perfectly balanced in flavor. The sashimi demonstrate excellent handling of fish at the «Sala», with the magnificent bluefin tuna standing out in particular. The perfectly marinated and torched salmon tartare with wasabi is bursting with flavor, while the nigiri do justice to the sushi master's skill. The braised wagyu with mashed potatoes and soy sauce reduction is also flawlessly executed, whereas the tempura of langoustines, asparagus, and pumpkin is delicate but somewhat unremarkable. The service is friendly and unobtrusive, yet at these prices, it is inexcusable that our request to avoid seafood from the third course onward was overlooked.
