The story
In the village centre of Wangen bei Dübendorf, just outside Zürich, Gasthof Sternen has been a welcoming presence since 2005, when host family Matthias and Bettina Brunner-Schill took over. The inn’s crown jewel is the Badstube, a vaulted room that once served as a bathhouse and later a coal cellar. Today, it is the setting for a Michelin-starred dining experience.
The Badstube’s cuisine is described as “subtle Mediterranean,” with a strong emphasis on seasonal, local ingredients. The kitchen, led by Matthias Brunner – who trained under Frédy Girardet in Crissier – prepares dishes with meticulous attention to detail. The Michelin star, awarded in 2026, notes “high quality cooking,” and the restaurant also holds 15 Gault Millau points. The wine list is extensive, offering a large selection of fine wines to accompany the meal.
Bettina Brunner-Schill grew up in her parents’ inn in the Black Forest, while Matthias trained as a chef and worked in top establishments including in Lucerne and on a cruise liner. They met at Daniel Bumann’s restaurant in La Punt and soon after took over Gasthof Sternen. Their passion for hospitality is evident in the warm welcome guests receive.
For a more casual meal, the Gaststube offers home-cooked dishes with a modern twist, served in a cosy parlour with oak floors and walnut tables. Whether for a full dinner or a light bistro dish with a glass of wine, the atmosphere encourages relaxed conversation.
The restaurant has been praised in local media, earning first place in “Zürich geht aus!” 2018/2019 for “Pure enjoyment in the countryside.” The combination of historical setting, skilful classic cuisine with Mediterranean influences, and genuine hospitality makes Sternen - Badstube a destination for those seeking a memorable meal in the Zürich countryside.
