The story
Perched above Erlenbach, the Zum Pflugstein occupies a carefully preserved Riegelbauernhaus (timber-framed farmhouse) with an uninterrupted view of Lake Zurich. Guests dine in the romantic Stübli, the fireplace room, or the garden terrace – each setting relaxed and unpretentious, yet refined.
Maria Appel, a Bavarian-born chef who worked at starred restaurants in Kitzbühel and Hurden, took over the kitchen in 2009. Together with her team, she prepares everything from scratch: fish fumets, fresh ravioli, and the small amuse-bouche and friandises that accompany coffee. The menu changes with the seasons, always market-fresh, and balances creative compositions with beloved Swiss classics such as Loup de mer, Wienerschnitzel, Siedfleisch, and the famous Hacktätschli.
The Pflugstein’s consistent quality has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand (good quality, good value) and 14 Gault Millau points – a testament to Appel’s precise, heartfelt cooking. It has also been named among Gault Millau’s “Top 10 Restaurants with a View” and scored 90 points in Falstaff’s guide.
For anyone seeking genuine Swiss cuisine in a setting that feels both special and welcoming, the Zum Pflugstein delivers exactly that.
