The story
Chef-proprietor Craig Thom runs Faffless, a Modern European kitchen tucked into a Georgian townhouse on Aberdeen's Golden Square. Thom describes the venue as a wine bar which became a restaurant by mistake. His training in a two-Michelin-star kitchen informs a menu that balances innovation with comfort. Local and international ingredients take center stage across a flexible layout. The space also hosts open-mic nights and private dining for up to forty guests in a dedicated room.
The Modern European cooking shines through a pick-and-mix selection of small plates. Expect truffled smoked salmon on sourdough toast and fresh sardines dressed with peppery rocket. A pear and serrano ham salad offers a lighter contrast before Thom's love for whisky surfaces in a butternut squash and pearl-onion tart tatin laced with the spirit. Larger sharing options include côte de boeuf paired with cod and ratatouille, finishing with a burnt Basque cheesecake. The food arrives in one fell swoop, encouraging guests to graze and explore.
Big windows look out onto the square inside a high-ceilinged room where screen prints and Scottish oil paintings hang for sale. The venue doubles as an art gallery, allowing visitors to see artwork in a home-like setting. The team, including staff members like Anona and Vlad, brings a touch of sass to service alongside Thom. The cellar focuses on old-world natural wines, with a strict commitment to organic and vegan labels. Guests might encounter surprises like a crisp Chardonnay from Welsh producers Mountain People, selected to complement the eclectic menu.
