The story

Asuke Sushi Review: Refined Japanese Cooking in Altrincham

The Kitchen and Menu Philosophy

Asuke Sushi in Altrincham sits quietly off the busy stretch of Manchester Road, offering a compact dining room where Japanese cooking takes centre stage. The menu extends beyond traditional rolls to include wok fried noodles and steamed bao, creating a flexible layout that suits both casual lunches and relaxed dinners. Families often choose the build your own poke bowls or sushi tacos, which keep younger palates engaged while adults explore more complex preparations.

Signature Preparations

Platters of nigiri arrive at precise temperatures, allowing diners to taste the clean finish of yellowfin tuna and the sweet char of bronzed eel unagi. The kitchen balances these raw elements with cooked comfort items like candyfloss light bao stuffed with kimchi chicken. Those preferring broth find the seafood ramen notably subtle, relying on carefully layered stocks rather than heavy seasoning. Every plate reflects a straightforward commitment to fresh ingredients and careful technique.

Drinks and Recognition

A jazz record spins softly during service while guests sip Japanese bottled beers or pour their own wine under the house BYO policy. Unlimited jasmine tea remains available throughout the evening to cleanse the palate between courses. This steady attention to detail earned the restaurant a Readers Recommend distinction from The Good Food Guide in 2026. Critics noted how the compact space feels both lively and unhurried, making it a reliable destination for Japanese cuisine in Greater Manchester.

On thundering Manchester Road, Asuke is a tiny escape with a lot on its plate. It's named for the decently rendered sushi, but a large and more international menu runs from bao to wok-fried noodles. Overall, it ticks a lot of boxes and feels especially welcoming for kids who want to rampage among the sushi tacos or get fussy with build-your-own poke bowls. Favourites include platters of beautifully topped nigiri, bronzed eel unagi and yellowfin tuna – all at just the right temperature. Candyfloss-light bao are stuffed with kimchi chicken and served with exceptional seasoned fries, while seafood ramen is subtle and satisfying. Japanese bottled beers, unlimited jasmine tea, BYO wine – and jazz on the turntable – complete an appealing picture.
