The story

Bar Etna: Award-Winning Sicilian Trattoria in Altrincham

The family behind the kitchen

At Bar Etna in Altrincham, owners Carmelo and Chiara Signorelli serve Sicilian food rooted in their native island. Their relaxed dining room earned a spot in The Good Food Guide Readers Recommend list, recognizing how consistently they balance hospitality with honest cooking. Every plate reflects that background, drawing directly from household recipes rather than trend-driven menus.

Plates from the island

The kitchen builds its menu around fresh dough and seasonal produce, starting with pillowy pizzas topped generously with spicy 'nduja and quality salami. Pasta courses move through textures quickly, offering trofie tossed in a smooth pistachio cream alongside crispy fried onions and pancetta. Another standout combines mini penne with anchovies, sardines, dill, and raisins, capturing the bright coastal flavors of traditional Sicilian cooking without leaning on heavy sauces.

Space, service, and the shop counter

A modest street-facing entrance opens into a wider room that doubles as a dedicated children’s play zone and a fully stocked deli. High chairs sit ready near the tables, while guests browse shelves lined with imported cured meats, regional cheeses, and exclusively Sicilian wines. You can grab a quick coffee, settle in for a slow dinner, or pack a few pantry staples to take home.

The Good Food Guide — Readers Recommend

Chiara and Carmelo Signorelli's relaxed Altrincham spot is a family affair in every sense. What looks like a little café from the main street opens into a shop, restaurant, deli counter and children's play area, giving it instant atmosphere and an all-day ease that harried parents love. Meanwhile, the Signorellis and their team open the Sicilian larder and shake it all about with heartfelt skill. Pillowy Sicilian pizza is richly adorned with 'nduja and great-quality salami, while pasta might be trofie with pistachio cream, fried onions and pancetta or a mini-penne take on bucatini con le sarde, pulling off the trick of making dill, anchovies, sardines and raisins sing merrily together. Puddings include cannolo, gelato-stuffed brioche or dippy almond and pistachio biscuits with muscat. Wines are well-priced and Sicilian, and you can buy pasta, ceramics and seasonal treats to take home.
