The story

Harcourt Altrincham: A Hong Kong Inspired Gastropub With Craft Beer and Readers’ Favourite Dishes

The kitchen and its origins

Harcourt in Altrincham offers a straightforward approach to Chinese cooking rooted in family recipes. Founded by a group of Hong Kong natives, the space functions as a quiet neighbourhood spot rather than a traditional gastropub. The founders built the concept around accessible flavours that recall home kitchens, keeping the atmosphere relaxed and unpretentious. This grounded philosophy ensures every plate feels familiar yet distinctly personal.

Signature plates and techniques

Typhoon shelter preparations define much of the kitchen’s output, featuring crispy garlic crumbs that shower over chips, tofu or chicken wings. Rich coconut curry chicken settles into signature rice gratins, while a salt and pepper pork chop arrives alongside a fried egg and chilli spiked rice. Braised beef brisket simmers in a deeply flavoured gravy, offering tender beef tendon as an optional addition. Even desserts lean into comfort, serving deep fried eggy bread stuffed with peanut butter and drizzled with golden syrup.

Drinks and atmosphere

A fourteen tap system anchors the room, showcasing UK brewers like Cloudwater, Rivington and Left Handed Giant alongside house collaborations. Pours start at a third of a pint, encouraging visitors to sample multiple selections throughout the evening. This careful curation helped secure the restaurant a Readers Recommend rating in the 2026 Good Food Guide, cementing its reputation for honest Chinese cuisine. The combination of precise brewing standards and hearty gastropub classics creates a consistently reliable night out.

The Good Food Guide — Readers Recommend

Launched by a team of Hong Kongers with an abiding passion for craft beer, Harcourt pairs a 14-strong tap list with the specialities of home. A plain unit, it feels more bar than pub, but with measures from one-third of a pint and a roll call of UK brewstars (Cloudwater, Rivington, Azvex, Left Handed Giant) plus their own collaborations on the board, there's plenty to explore. That goes for the food, too: chips, tofu or chicken wings done 'typhoon shelter' style with the showering of crunchy, garlicky crumbs takes its cue from Hong Kong's old fishing communities, while rich signature rice gratins with coconut curry chicken, or a salt-and-pepper pork chop served with a fried egg, crispy garlic and chilli-spiked rice also hit the spot. Gentler flavours might be braised beef brisket in a lip-smacking gravy, with an optional add-on of snappy-soft beef tendon. On the sweet side, you're looking – perhaps with some apprehension, which should absolutely be put aside – at chunks of deep-fried, peanut butter-stuffed eggy bread with golden syrup.
