The story
On Church Street, THE SCHELLY brings something quietly exceptional to Ambleside. The restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand award for 2026, a recognition that speaks to its commitment to good quality, good value cooking. Walk in and you’ll find a space designed for relaxed, thoughtful dining—with air conditioning for comfort and wheelchair access for ease.
Open Wednesday through Saturday, THE SCHELLY serves lunch from 12 until 2pm and dinner from 5 to 9.30pm. The dining room is complemented by outdoor seating for warmer days and a counter at the bar that operates on a first-come, first-served basis—no reservation needed. This high seating at the bar is ideal for solo diners or a spontaneous meal, though it may not suit everyone’s comfort or mobility needs.
The team takes dietary requests seriously. With at least 48 hours’ notice, they can accommodate most health- or allergy-related needs. However, due to the size of the kitchen and shared equipment, they cannot guarantee any dish is completely allergen-free. For guests with severe allergies that risk anaphylaxis, they advise that cross-contamination cannot be ruled out—an honest, transparent policy that respects every diner’s safety.
Reservations are available online, and a standby list is offered when the restaurant is fully booked. Whether you’re planning ahead or dropping by for a bar seat, THE SCHELLY delivers the kind of straightforward, confident cooking that makes a Bib Gourmand award feel well earned.
