The story

The Kirkmichael Arms, Ayr: Michelin-Recommended Modern British Pub Dining

The Kirkmichael Arms, Ayr

In the rolling hills of South Ayrshire, a 1700s coaching inn has been given a new life. The Kirkmichael Arms, named Best Scottish Pub 2025 at The Scotsman Scran Awards and holding a Michelin recommendation, is that rare thing: a proper country pub where the cooking is as ambitious as the welcome is warm.

The story is an unlikely one. When the pub closed in 2023, the village began to lose its heart. Two locals, with no pub-owning experience, set out to find someone who could revive it. Their search led them to Justin Galea, an Australian chef who had trained in Melbourne kitchens (Lynch’s and Shannon Bennett’s Bistro Vue) and fallen for Scotland while working at Trump Turnberry. He was in a Thai jungle when they called; he said yes, sight unseen.

That leap of faith defines the place. Galea’s vision is unapologetically Scottish, sourcing from local Ayrshire farmers and artisans, then reaching across the lowlands, highlands and islands. The kitchen smokes its own salmon, churns butter, cures bacon and bakes bread in a pre-industrial manner, because they believe that care translates to the plate. The cooking draws on classical French techniques with Asian influences, creating Modern British food that is both robust and refined.

The dining room remains a pub at heart. You can bring the family for Sunday lunch, celebrate an anniversary, or simply settle by the fire with a pint and fish and chips. The bar boasts one of the best whisky collections in Ayrshire, and the wine list is thoughtfully selected. A three-course children’s menu is available for £14.95.

The Kirkmichael Arms is Ayrshire’s only Michelin-recommended restaurant, yet it wears the accolade lightly. It is a place of honest, robust cooking, a warm fire, and a welcome that feels as genuine as the landscape that surrounds it.
