The story
At The Free Company, everything begins on the farm. Located at Cockdurno Farmhouse in Balerno, just outside Edinburgh, this restaurant grows and raises food using organic, no-dig, regenerative practices that prioritise soil health, biodiversity, and true sustainability. This commitment was recognised with the Sustainability Award at the National Restaurant Awards 2025, and the restaurant has also earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026, cementing its place as a destination for thoughtful, ingredient-led dining.
The restaurant offers a seasonal à la carte menu that evolves daily based on what is fresh and available from the farm. Guests can choose from snacks by the fire, a laid-back lunch, or a full feast—each plate telling the story of the land. Sample menus are available, but the exact offerings change with the seasons and daily harvests. Dietary requirements are happily accommodated; please note them when booking.
The bar complements the food with a carefully curated selection of natural and organic wines, local beers, seasonal cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks. Children are welcome, and a reduced-price children’s menu is available. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with cosy, characterful spaces ideal for private dining for groups of up to 35.
The Free Company is open Thursday through Sunday, with lunch and dinner sittings. Reservations are recommended, though walk-ins are always welcome. A free shuttle service from the nearest bus stop is available for dinner services by pre-booking. For larger groups or private events, contact the team directly.
