The story
Set in a former Georgian greenhouse on bustling Bartlett Street, Beckford Canteen is a light, airy space where banquettes, leather dining chairs and window countertops invite you to watch the world go by. It is a restaurant built for both a quick, tasty bite and a longer, more indulgent meal.
Head chef Joe Lacey leads the kitchen, bringing experience from Michelin-starred restaurants including Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s and the Stokehouse in Melbourne, as well as time spent cooking privately in the South of France. His cooking is guided by a simple philosophy: "just to cook some super tasty food using the best produce that the South West has to offer."
The menu is inspired by the seasons and the abundant local produce surrounding Bath. European influence and Mediterranean flair meet proper technique, resulting in recognisable favourites served at their best. The kitchen works with suppliers such as Walter Rose & Son, a multi-award-winning Wiltshire butcher, and the Community Farm, a not-for-profit organic farm near Bristol. The restaurant’s Modern British approach is grounded in provenance and careful sourcing.
The wine list is food-centric, leaning towards the old world, with rotating specials by the glass or bottle. A thoughtful selection of house cocktails, local beers, cider and non-alcoholic drinks rounds out the offering. Sunday lunch features roast chicken breast, pork belly and beef sirloin with all the trimmings, including confit potatoes.
Beckford Canteen is a 2026 Michelin Recommended restaurant, recognised for its elegant, seasonal cooking and warm hospitality. It is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday, and for Sunday lunch.
