The story
Chez Dominique in Bath delivers a focused modern French menu from a kitchen rooted in classic training. Chris and Sarah opened the venue in September 2016, naming it after their eldest son, Dominic. Their early careers spanned Cambridge’s Three Horseshoes and London’s Bibendum, where precise techniques met a heavy focus on seasonal produce. Head Chef Sam Lewis now applies those methods to an Anglo-French kitchen, letting ingredient quality drive every plate.
The dining room occupies the ground floor of a Georgian terrace near Pulteney Bridge. Daylight fills the main area, while a separate private room hosts six to eight guests facing the river. Sarah guides the front of house with a calm rhythm, keeping the pace comfortable whether the room is quiet or busy. Guests consistently note the straightforward layout, which favours easy conversation over staged theatrics.
The French kitchen follows a strict seasonal calendar, featuring seared scallops with kimchi and onglet steak finished with Café de Paris butter. Lighter plates highlight sea bream dressed with a delicate lovage sauce. Evenings typically end with poached rhubarb served alongside whipped mascarpone and vanilla crumb. A predominantly French wine list complements these dishes, running from accessible bottles to deeper cellar picks.
