The story
James St opened its doors in September 2003, founded by chef Niall McKenna. From the start, it set out to be the sort of place locals return to – a restaurant for celebrations, casual lunches, and business dinners alike. Today, McKenna runs the kitchen alongside Dylan Turner and Vincent Gault, while Paul Vaughan oversees the front of house. The team’s steady hand has kept James St among Belfast’s most reliable dining rooms for over two decades.
The heart of the kitchen is a charcoal grill. It turns out dishes built around Tyrone Beef and sustainably sourced fish, with a menu that changes to follow the seasons. Sunday lunch here is widely considered the best in Belfast. Diners can choose from a two- or three-course set menu, while the a la carte offers more flexibility. An extensive global wine list and a cocktail menu sit alongside a full collection of Bushmills Irish whiskey.
The restaurant has been recognised with a Michelin Recommended award, a nod to the consistent quality that has kept it on the map. The Sunday Times named it one of the 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland in 2023, and McKenna took home LCN Chef of the Year honours from McKenna’s Guides.
For private events, a first-floor dining room accommodates up to 40 guests. James St also runs a chef and front-of-house apprenticeship programme, training the next generation of hospitality talent through a partnership with Belfast Met.
