The story

The Bildeston Crown: Modern British Dining in Bildeston's Historic Inn

The chef and the estate

The Bildeston Crown in Bildeston serves modern British cuisine through the lens of Executive Chef Greig Young, who champions an estate-to-plate ethos linked to the neighbouring Nedging Hall Estate. The kitchen garden at Nedging Hall supplies the kitchen with fresh seasonal produce and local game, allowing the menu to shift with the landscape throughout the year. Young prepares these ingredients uncluttered, eschewing pretension for big flavours in his reworked pub classics. This dedication to straightforward seasonal cooking earned the restaurant a Good Food Guide recognition for 2026. The commitment to local supply lines also contributed to the venue winning the Eat Game National Pub of the Year award in 2025. Beers from Mauldons Brewery, brewed with barley grown on the estate, sit alongside an enterprising wine list behind the bar.

Seasonal plates and pub staples

The modern British menu features a ham hock and Moletrap mustard terrine alongside mains such as spiced beef rump paired with creamed corn and curry-pickled Roscoff onion. Regular orders include the succulent pork chop with peppercorn sauce and new potatoes, or a BBQ mackerel fillet cooked with tomatoes, fennel, and cucumber. The Bildeston beef burger appears with mushroom ketchup and crispy bacon jam, while dessert draws attention to a rich chocolate brownie served with vanilla ice cream.

Character and accommodation

The Bildeston Crown occupies a Grade II* building constructed in 1495, retaining wonky beams and a mustard-hued exterior that reflect its history as a merchant's house and coaching inn. Guests can relax in the beamed bar or take advantage of the suntrap courtyard for alfresco dining when conditions allow. The property also provides thirteen en-suite bedrooms, each featuring unique styles developed during a restoration that sourced antiques from local Suffolk shops.

The Good Food Guide — Good

When it comes to the world of country inns, this handsome 15th-century roadside village hostelry offers the complete package. Whether you’re relaxing by the fire in the beamed bar or taking advantage of alfresco tables in the ‘wonderful suntrap courtyard’, it sets the scene for straightforward seasonal cooking. Local supply lines run deep here. The kitchen garden at nearby Nedging Hall Estate (which owns the pub) supplies the kitchen with fresh, seasonal produce (as well as local game), which executive chef Greig Young interprets in a refreshingly uncluttered way. From a ham hock and Moletrap mustard terrine to spiced beef rump with creamed corn, curry-pickled Roscoff onion and chips, his retooled pub classics eschew pretension in favour of big flavours. Good value is at the heart of the menu, with the three-course midweek set lunch proving popular on our visit. True to form, it delivered a wonderfully flavoured tomato, courgette and herb salad, as well as main courses ranging from a succulent pork chop with peppercorn sauce and new potatoes to a perfectly cooked BBQ mackerel fillet with tomatoes, fennel and cucumber. To finish, a rich warm chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream was perfect for sharing. Service is charming, the bar stocks the estate’s own Mauldons ale, and the wine list offers enterprising possibilities across the board.
