The story

The Jetty Christchurch: Modern British Dining by the Harbour

The chef and the kitchen

At The Jetty in Christchurch, Chef Patron Alex Aitken anchors a modern British kitchen built around daily catches from Mudeford Quay. Oysters, lobster and local shrimp arrive straight from the water, guiding the seasonal menu rather than following trends. The Good Food Guide praises his seasonal approach, noting how fresh seafood from local waters forms the backbone of the menu. This consistent effort has earned the venue steady industry recognition over the years.

Plates from the coast and beyond

Cockle popcorn arrives lightly spiced, offering a crisp introduction before heavier courses take shape. The kitchen pairs coastal staples like cod and crab in a herby crust with land-based plates such as lamb panzanella served alongside rosemary polenta. A classic Japanese-inspired sashimi platter featuring sea bass and scallop relies entirely on the morning’s freshness. Vegetarian guests can also order a vibrant spring risotto that fits naturally into the overall Modern British menu.

Space and setting

The dining room sits directly on the water’s edge within the Christchurch Harbour Hotel grounds, where a modern glass facade turns the harbour into a living backdrop. Large windows flood the interior with daylight, while an outdoor terrace extends the seating closer to the tide. Guests frequently note how the architecture removes any barrier between the table and the shoreline, highlighting why British coastal cooking thrives here. The layout supports both quiet lunches and lively evening gatherings without feeling crowded.

Wine and finishing touches

The beverage program opens at twenty-nine pounds and splits its shelf into cult selections and established classics. Pairs well with the kitchen’s finale, where the crêpe Suzette soufflé blends two French traditions into a single warm plate. The dessert balances citrus notes with a light pastry shell that holds the custard center. It remains a reliable way to close a multi course meal.

Positioned on the water's edge to max out the views across Christchurch Harbour, The Jetty is a modern construction with acres of glass to ensure that those panoramic vistas are served up to one and all (there's a terrace, too, if you want to feel even closer to nature). Alex Aitken is a chef with a passion for seasonal cooking (and a bit of a legend in these parts), and it's satisfying to report that fresh seafood from local waters is the backbone of his menu – no surprise given the glorious coastal location. Cockle popcorn, crispy and lightly spiced, is a little snack which sums up the ambition and joie de vivre of the place. A starter plate of sashimi (including sea bass and scallop) stands or falls on its freshness and its classic Japanese accompaniments, or there's fish soup – a classic from another continent. Elsewhere, cod and crab are firm friends, the former topped with the latter in a herby crust, and it's worth keeping an eye out for the 'catch of the day'. Away from the coast, there are other options such as beef carpaccio or a deliciously green spring risotto to start, followed by the likes of lamb panzanella with rosemary polenta. For afters, crêpe Suzette soufflé combines two archetypal French desserts. A tasting menu might fit the bill if the whole table is on board, while the vegan and vegetarian option doesn't stint on creativity or flavour. The wine list opens at £29, and includes sections dedicated to 'cult and classic' whites and reds.
