The story

Hive Beach Café, Bridport: Fresh Coastal Seafood Since 1991

Origins on the Jurassic Coast

Hive Beach Café in Bridport anchors its seafood menu where Steve Attrill first opened a modest kiosk on the National Trust's beach in 1991. The vision was simple: serve Dorset's natural larder while protecting the coastline that supplies it. The operation has grown from that humble shack into an award-winning spot, yet the commitment to local fishermen and sustainable sourcing remains central to every plate.

A Menu Driven by the Catch

Guests often gather under the covered marquee to enjoy the view across Dorset's cliffs and headlands. The kitchen builds its menu around the day's catch, offering staples like crab sandwiches and Newlyn hake and chips alongside specials such as grilled megrim sole served with samphire, crayfish, and blackened cauliflower purée. Other plates include halibut in a tomato jus with edamame beans. Sweet finishes lean toward a creamy lemon posset that cuts through the richness of the seafood dishes.

Drinks and Village Vibes

The atmosphere shifts with the seasons and special occasions. Friday evenings bring live bongo music and sunset vibes, while rare events like the August solar eclipse draw crowds for champagne and seafood suppers. The bar highlights house-produced goods, including wines distilled on-site and spirits crafted with partners like E18teen. Flavours range from Apple Cake Gin to Bakewell Tart Gin Liqueur. Staff are known for their warmth, keeping service smooth even when the place fills up.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Picture the scene: a lovely sunny day and a delightful lunch by the sea, complete with a gorgeous panoramic prospect of Dorset’s cliffs and headlands beyond. In fine weather, diners head for the covered marquee, before dipping into the ever-changing menu of fresh, flavoursome local seafood. Breakfast and lunch are the main events, with staples such as crab sandwiches or Newlyn hake and chips competing with specials from the day’s catch – perhaps grilled megrim sole with samphire, crayfish and blackened cauliflower purée or halibut in tomato jus with edamame beans. For afters, nothing beats a creamy lemon posset with heady notes of citrus. Enthusiastic local staff stay focused – even when the place is packed. Decent drinks too.
