The story

Oeuf Café Hove: Readers Recommend for Breakfast and Brunch in Brighton & Hove

A Dream Realised on Third Avenue

Oeuf Café in Hove serves breakfast and brunch from a venue Amber and Tobias renovated by hand, transforming number 8 Third Avenue through months of sanding floors and upholstering chairs. Amber drew inspiration from visits to London cafés like Ottolenghi and Correlli's, combining those memories with twelve years of restaurant management experience to build an independent space off the beaten track. The couple secured this location on one of Hove's Avenues to realize a childhood dream, creating a cosy, candle-lit setting that feels distinct from the high street just steps away from the sea.

Seasonal Plates and the Hashinator

The kitchen prioritises locally sourced ingredients and sustainable habits, including delivering coffee by bicycle to reduce emissions. Diners consistently highlight the hashinator, a homemade sausage patty accompanied by hash browns, while the menu also features inventive options like the frumpet with deep-fried camembert, pigs in blankets, and crispy sage. Fresh brunch plates change with the seasons, offering items such as poached pear French toast layered with chestnut chantilly and hazelnut praline, or tartiflette bites topped with reblochon cheese and lardons.

The Secret Garden and Recognition

The dining area opens onto an outdoor terrace with sea views and leads to a private secret garden situated behind the restaurant, providing space for up to sixty-five guests. This relaxed atmosphere and attentive service contributed to Oeuf earning a Readers Recommend award in the Good Food Guide, where patrons praised the fantastic space near the coast. Whether visiting for a casual lunch or settling into the coffee lounge for a cocktail, the café maintains its walk-in policy and community focus within a warm, natural-light-filled interior.

‘I usually take my friends here when they come to visit. The space is fantastic and they do a great breakfast – I really like their 'hashinator' (homemade sausage patty with hash browns etc). Service is great, the vibe is always relaxed and it's so close to the beach in a quiet area.' Diego Ricaurte
