The story

Dongnae Bristol: Award-Winning Korean Neighbourhood Dining on Chandos Road

Origins and Recognition

Kyu Jeong Jeon and Duncan Robertson opened Dongnae in Bristol's Redland district, bringing their expertise in Korean cooking to their second venture. The couple met at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Paris before running Restaurant L'Envie in France, which earned a Michelin star within two years. They named this spot after the Korean word for neighbourhood, reflecting their goal to serve as part of the local community. Their dedication has resonated widely; the restaurant climbed to number twelve on the National Restaurant Awards Top 100 list in 2026, up from forty-six the previous year.

Fermentation and Signature Plates

The kitchen operates with a strict emphasis on time-honoured processes, producing banchan and sauces entirely in-house. Chefs follow techniques taught by master Sukja Jo to craft jangs like doenjang and gochujang, while kimchi and jeotgal ferment on-site. This rigorous approach shapes dishes such as Jinju style raw beef served with house gochujang and Korean pear, or octopus and mutton fat kkochi glazed in gochucumin. Salt-aged mackerel and cold noodles in dongchimi broth highlight the balance between tradition and modern refinement in their Korean cuisine.

Space and Wine Selection

Housed within two former Victorian shops, the dining room features a communal wooden countertop facing the open kitchen, surrounded by paper lanterns and recycled plastic stools. Reservations cover the full experience, though guests may drop in for drinks and snacks. The wine programme aligns with the food's fermentation focus, sourced exclusively from Bristol-based importers Vine Trail. Grower Champagnes and aromatic Alsace whites sit alongside chilled Pinot Noir selections, complementing signature dishes in the Korean kitchen where chefs prepare Pluma Iberica and Cotswold Wagyu from local suppliers.
