The story
On Churchgate Street in Bury St Edmunds, Bellota brings a chef-led, personal approach to fine dining. The guiding philosophy, “Tu Placer es Nuestro Placer” — “Your pleasure is our pleasure” — is evident from the moment you sit at the counter overlooking the open kitchen. It is a space built on transparency and interaction, where the chef and team serve and connect with guests directly.
The restaurant’s modern cuisine draws on Spanish heritage and local Suffolk ingredients. Two tasting menus, Abrazo (7 courses, £85) and Vuelve (8 courses, £98), change with the market and the chef’s mood. Dishes such as Lowestoft wild bass with green peas, baby carrots, and lemon emulsion, or Iberian pork secreto with roasted parsnip and elderflower, showcase the kitchen’s precision and confidence. Pastry Chef Gabi Fogarasi creates the desserts, including a strawberry course with yoghurt mousse, cardamom, and lemon verbena. Optional wine pairings — 5 or 6 flights — are available, and the wine list focuses on Spanish bottles, with a few English and Hungarian selections.
The atmosphere is relaxed fine dining: warm, welcoming, and free of stiffness. The restaurant describes itself as “chef-led, personal and approachable,” inviting guests to engage with the chefs and fellow diners. There are no unnecessary frills, just a focus on food and conversation.
Bellota earned a Michelin Recommended award in 2026, and has received praise from critics including Grace Dent and William Sitwell. The recognition is a natural fit for a restaurant that has, since opening, drawn attention for its confident, personal cooking. It is a place where the pleasure of the guest is the only measure of success.
