The story
Set behind the dunes of Camber Sands, Harry’s at The Gallivant brings a slice of coastal escapism to East Sussex. The restaurant blends vintage seaside nostalgia with the honesty of great cooking – a vision inspired by owners Harry and Sigrid’s time in California. Country Life magazine called it “the best dinner we’ve ever had,” and Grace Dent named Harry’s one of the UK’s great restaurants outside London for 2025. Its Michelin Recommended status reflects the quiet confidence of a kitchen that lets ingredients speak.
Leading the kitchen is former Bibendum Chef Director Matthew Harris. His menus draw on a career spent in classic French restaurants, returning to dishes that have “stood the test of time.” Harris’s approach is grounded in the pages of Simon Hopkinson’s cookbooks – delicious food that needs no reference book to understand. At Harry’s, he cooks what he loves: classic brasserie dishes that highlight local, seasonal produce, often presented as sharing plates for two or more.
The à la carte changes regularly with whatever Harris can source at its best, while weekday lunch offers lighter dishes in Harry’s Bar. At weekends, a full menu and a Sunday roast join the prix-fixe option. Every dish reflects the French bistro tradition – straightforward, ingredient-led cooking that doesn’t try to impress, but simply satisfies. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, with wheelchair access, a private room, and parking available.
