The story

Buren Restaurant in Cambridge | Seasonal Dutch Bistro & Local Gem

The kitchen and its origins

Buren brings a seasonal Dutch kitchen to Cambridge, founded by chef Leo Riethoff and his wife Charley. The name translates to neighbours in Dutch, a concept that shapes their straightforward seasonal cooking. Working alongside the team behind Steak and Honour, they focus on pasture-fed ingredients and uncomplicated techniques. The menu shifts with what arrives at the market, keeping each seasonal plate grounded in the current harvest.

Signature plates and local touches

Diners often start with the house bitterballen, which pack tender pasture-fed beef shin inside a crisp crust. The Buren burger follows a similar philosophy, featuring a generous slab of American cheese that melts completely over the patty. Roasted aubergine parmesan offers a vegetable-focused alternative, though the cheese requires a few minutes to settle after arriving hot. Sweet finishes arrive from the neighbouring Eclipse Bakery, where lemon meringue pie and rhubarb crumble provide reliable comfort.

The dining room and service

An intimate interior seats guests comfortably for weekday lunches or weekend evenings, while sunny pavement tables extend the space onto Mill Road. A carefully curated wine list runs alongside the food options, offering straightforward pairings without pretension. Staff maintain a quiet, attentive pace that suits everything from casual solo stops to larger family gatherings. This steady rhythm earned the venue recognition in the 2026 Good Food Guide as a Local Gem.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

Buren means ‘neighbours’ in Dutch and this vision of Dutch-heritage chef Leo Riethoff and his wife Charley (the couple behind Steak & Honour) delivers on the vibe. It’s a comfortable bistro with a simple, well-priced menu, a few specials, a snappy wine list, and alert, kind service – perfect for a gathering of friends and family, a cosy date night, or an impromptu solo meal at sunny pavement tables. Must orders? Bitterballen – hot, crisp Dutch croquettes luxuriously filled with pasture-fed beef shin; the Buren burger with its molten slump of American cheese, and the aubergine 'parm', which is delicious once its bubbling thermonuclear intent calms down. Pastry-themed desserts (lemon meringue pie or rhubarb crumble, perhaps) are made by the neighbouring Eclipse Bakery.
