The story
The Sorting Room occupies the grand rooms of Cardiff’s old Post Office, a building opened in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Now part of The Parkgate Hotel, the space is filled with glittering chandeliers and plush leather sofas, creating an atmosphere that is both glamorous and welcoming. It is a chic spot to meet and dine in the heart of the city.
The kitchen focuses on Modern British cuisine with a brasserie sensibility. The à la carte menu changes with the seasons, highlighting fresh, local ingredients. A signature dish is the Welsh Beef Wellington, so celebrated that the restaurant offers a dedicated Wellington Experience – three courses paired with a champagne cocktail. Afternoon tea is another highlight, served with a sense of bygone occasion. Sunday lunch, set lunch, and set dinner menus provide options for every kind of visit, from a quick midday meal to a leisurely evening.
The Sorting Room holds both a Michelin Guide listing and two AA Rosettes for its Modern British cooking. The dress code is smart casual; the mood is one of relaxed elegance.
Lunch is a leisurely affair, dinner an occasion to savour. The bar and lounge buzzes with live music on Saturdays, and the Cwrt Terrace offers outdoor drinks and light bites. Whether you come for a full meal or simply champagne and cocktails, The Sorting Room delivers a distinctly polished evening in the heart of the capital.
