The story
Husband-and-wife team Marcus and Kate founded Restaurant 5 North Street in the chocolate-box Cotswolds town of Winchcombe. Inspired by classic, understated dining rooms, they created an informal space devoid of pretence and fuss. The result is a venue that feels welcoming for lunch, dinner, or a full degustation.
The kitchen is led by Gus, a chef who has earned four separate Michelin stars and worked alongside some of the world’s finest cooks, including Michel Roux Snr. His reputation as a “chef’s chef” commands respect, yet his cooking remains approachable. Under his expert tutelage, seasonal produce from the region’s best producers is transformed into dishes that are as beautiful as they are flavourful.
The menu is Modern British, rooted in classical French technique. Canapés arrive as a riot of flavour, mains are robust and underpinned by starry cooking, and dreamy desserts linger long in the memory. The best of seasonal produce is used in every course, from lunch through to a la carte and tasting menus. The restaurant’s Michelin Recommended status for 2026 reflects the consistent excellence of Gus’s cooking.
Marcus Ashenford’s cookbook, Flavour, captures the essence of the restaurant’s cuisine. Across 160 lavishly photographed pages, it explains how to achieve balanced flavours and classic combinations – a testament to the philosophy that drives the kitchen at 5 North Street.
