The story

Six Chimneys Bakery in Cheltenham: Award-Winning Artisan Bakes and Local Gem Status

Local acclaim and a weekly rhythm

Six Chimneys Bakery has secured a reputation as one of the UK's top fifty bakeries, a distinction recognised by The Good Food Guide which awarded the Cheltenham establishment a Local Gem title. Located in Alstone, the bakery embraces a disciplined schedule, opening its doors solely on Saturdays from 8:00 am until 1:30 pm. This limited availability highlights the intensity of interest surrounding the output; success achieved on a once-a-week basis reflects the strength of the product. Visitors gather for fresh baked goods that justify the wait, turning a brief window into a concentrated experience of artisan craft.

Flavour-packed baked goods

The kitchen delivers a diverse range of items, balancing classic staples with inventive compositions. Sourdough loaves and viennoiserie provide reliable foundations, while creamy patisserie adds richness to the display. Playful offerings include an egg-custard danish layered with spiced cream, or a croissantine combining honey, brown butter, and almond. Savoury selections match the sweetness with substance, featuring meaty sausage rolls and substantial sandwiches. A standout option is the savoury pie made with slow-cooked shin of beef marinated in red wine. All products emphasise flavour-packed profiles derived from local ingredients.

Education and community engagement

Six Chimneys extends its role beyond retail by operating as a bakery school where individuals can book workshops to master specific techniques. Highly trained artisans guide students through the process, sharing expertise directly within the Cheltenham context. The model includes a pop-up shop setup that facilitates delivery and collection for local customers, alongside wholesale arrangements that distribute goods more widely. Catering services and event support further integrate the bakery into the region's social fabric. This multi-faceted approach allows the business to serve as both a production hub and a centre for learning.

The Good Food Guide — Local Gem

For a small artisan bakery to have found great success with such limited hours says a great deal about the amazing things coming out of its ovens. Six Chimneys opens on Saturdays only and that’s it. Their once-a-week offerings include such crowd-pleasers as sourdough loaves, viennoiserie, morning buns and creamy patisserie, as well as more playful items along the lines of an egg-custard danish with spiced cream, or honey, brown butter and almond croissantine, or even lemon, basil and black-pepper cake. Also expect meaty sausage rolls, substantial sandwiches and savoury pies such as slow-cooked shin of beef marinated in red wine.
