The story
At Post in Newnham on Severn, head chef Fred Page guides a seasonal modern European kitchen where the menu shifts weekly according to what arrives from the nearby market garden at The Three Doves. Owners Ben Thompson and Florence de Maré designed the space with an eye for craft, letting the cooking take centre stage. Almost every element comes from scratch, including the olive oil soaked spelt rolls and housemade rhubarb cordials. This dedication to traceable ingredients defines their approach to modern European cooking.
Guests encounter a rotating selection of small plates and sharing sets rather than fixed à la carte offerings. A typical dinner might feature partridge accompanied by braised cabbage and bread sauce, or bass crudo paired with miyagawa. The kitchen also prepares rich preparations like pig’s head croquettes and burrata served with Jerusalem artichoke and salsa verde. These dishes reflect a practical yet refined style that values balance over excess.
The restaurant occupies a beautifully restored former Post Office on the High Street, where a high top counter surrounds the pass. Designers ensured clear sightlines from every seat, creating an open layout that feels both spacious and intimate. Guests enjoy attentive service alongside a wine list featuring independent growers. The venue recently earned a Very Good rating in The Good Food Guide for its consistent execution and warm community spirit.
