The story

Sam & Jak Cirencester: Modern European Dining with Local Flair

The chefs behind the counter

Sam & Jak brings a contemporary approach to modern European cuisine to the heart of Cirencester, where chef-owners Sam Edwards and Jak Doggett lead a busy, all-day operation. Edwards and Doggett run the kitchen visible from the ground-floor tiled bar, allowing guests to watch dishes being prepared. Their philosophy centres on simple, considered menus that shift with the seasons. The pair focus on sourcing high-quality ingredients from local producers while applying a broader European influence to their cooking.

A split-level space for every occasion

The restaurant occupies two floors within a historic building, offering distinct atmospheres depending on where you sit. The lower level features bare wood tables alongside comfortable green banquettes, anchored by the activity of the open kitchen above the bar. Upstairs, original wooden beams and exposed brick walls create a warmer backdrop, enlivened by colourful framed prints scattered across the walls. Both areas maintain the relaxed, welcoming vibe praised by the Good Food Guide.

Seasonal plates and regional produce

Diners often start with truffled broad beans and pea shoots served on a garlic and mozzarella flatbread, highlighting the kitchen's skill with vegetable-forward dishes. Main courses rotate frequently, though the curried crab fried rice with samphire and coriander remains a standout favourite. Other notable selections include a grilled pork chop accompanied by creamed fennel and fregola, or a confit duck leg paired with white beans and summer vegetables. The rotating menu showcases the best of modern European cooking, grounded in the season's harvest.

The Good Food Guide — Good

Spread over two floors, this stylishly renovated all-day diner in the historic centre of Cirencester is garnering high praise from locals who throng the place for breakfast, snacks and full meals. Grab a counter seat at the tiled bar on the ground floor to see chef-owners Sam Edwards and Jak Doggett in action in the open kitchen. Upstairs, the building’s original wooden beams and brick walls are enlivened by colourful framed prints, while green banquettes provide comfy seating at bare wood tables. The regularly changing menu draws inspiration from Europe and beyond but makes the best of local produce – from a starter of truffled broad beans and pea shoots on a garlic and mozzarella flatbread to macerated local strawberries adding some sweet acidity to a creamy Basque cheesecake. In between, curried crab fried rice is a must-have main course (with assorted accompaniments that could include samphire, coriander, chilli and lime) or you might fancy a grilled pork chop with creamed fennel, fregola and tapenade. Warm, enthusiastic and helpful service adds to the relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere – thanks to a young team 'who will go the extra mile’. Good-quality house wines by the glass are rivalled by an enticing line-up of cocktails.
