The story
Afon sits within Penmaenuchaf, a stone-fronted country house high above the Mawddach estuary in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. The landscape here is dramatic, ancient, and unmistakably Welsh – a land of myth and rugged beauty that inspires everything the restaurant does.
Head Chef Dan Andree creates menus focused on high-quality, delicious ingredients sourced as locally as possible. The kitchen’s dedication to craft has earned Afon a Michelin Recommended award for 2026, a recognition that speaks to the precision and care behind each plate.
The restaurant also nurtures young talent. In 2025, Demi Chef de Partie Robert Griffiths won the Chef Category at the Young Chef Young Waiter Young Mixologist Wales National Finals – a testament to the strength of the team and the depth of skill in the kitchen.
Dining at Afon is part of a broader stay at Penmaenuchaf, a house with a history stretching back to the 16th century. The restaurant, bar, and lounge spaces are gently evolving under owners Zoe and Neil Kedward, who took over in 2022 as part of the Seren family of businesses. The atmosphere is one of unbuttoned hospitality – warm, welcoming, and rooted in the remarkable mountain landscape.
Whether you come for dinner, a private party, or one of the guest chef nights (Michelin-starred Hywel Griffith has taken over the kitchen for special evenings), Afon offers a modern cuisine experience that feels both refined and deeply connected to its place.
