The story
Hendersons in Edinburgh continues the story of the UK's longest running vegetarian restaurant, reopening under new management in October 2021. Barrie Henderson took the helm after his grandmother Janet's original Hanover Street location closed in 2020. The family has deep roots here; Barrie joined the business at 14 and later earned a Masters in Hospitality. Head chef Anna Czapiewska brings a creative approach shaped by her Polish upbringing and time working in London. She emphasizes fermentation and foraging wild mushrooms, techniques that bring distinct character to the Scottish produce used daily in their vegetarian and vegan cuisine.
The menu highlights locally sourced ingredients transformed through careful preparation. Standout plates include the vegan Henderson Haggis served with root mash and whisky tarragon cream, alongside a marinated Lion's Mane mushroom steak paired with cider sauce and truffled celeriac puree. Guests can also find an updated lentil lasagne made with homemade pasta and a return of the original chocolate mousse recipe. Sides range from roasted courgette with sumac chickpeas to aubergine tartare with caramelized onions.
Situated close to Bruntsfield Links, the space features textured walls and an archway designed as a tribute to the restaurant's historic predecessor. This commitment to quality has earned recognition from the We're Smart Green Guide, which awarded Hendersons two radishes for its sustainability efforts. The venue offers wheelchair access through an 81cm wide entrance and maintains a welcoming environment where dogs are permitted. Natural seasonal drinks and cocktails complement the food, reinforcing the focus on fresh, organic ingredients.
