The story

Valvona & Crolla: Award-Winning Italian Dining in Edinburgh

Roots in a historic shop

Valvona & Crolla delivers its celebrated Italian cooking to Edinburgh through a kitchen rooted in decades of deli tradition. The Contini family originally opened the Elm Row shop as a purveyor of fine provisions, and that heritage still shapes every plate served today. The restaurant sits just past the aisles of imported cheeses and regional wines, creating a direct link between supplier and table. Seasonal Scottish produce joins these Mediterranean imports to form the foundation of the menu.

Handmade pasta and seasonal plates

The Italian kitchen prepares fresh pasta daily, focusing on simple preparations that let the ingredients speak. Guests often order spaghettini tossed with palourde clams or orecchiette finished with cime di rape, anchovies, and extra virgin olive oil. Heavier options like the pistachio crumbed lamb rump or crispy fritto misto appear alongside lighter salads featuring fennel, orange, and goat’s cheese. The meal typically concludes with V&C’s signature bombolone doughnuts or house made gelati.

An informal gathering space

The rear of the premises opens into a bustling caffè bar where diners graze throughout the afternoon. Staff maintain a relaxed pace suited to both quick lunches and lingering evening meals. Because the owners run the adjacent wine shop, guests can select bottles directly from the retail cellar and pay a small service charge to enjoy them at their table. A shorter selection of house wines starts at seventeen pounds per bottle, keeping the Italian dining experience grounded and approachable.

The Good Food Guide — Good

Edinburgh’s Italian gastro-scene owes a great deal to members of the Contini dynasty, in fact their original deli and wine store remains ‘numero uno’ in the city with its treasure-trove of artisan provisions. Thread your way past the shelves of comestibles and regional wines to reach the jam-packed caffè bar at the back of the premises. Informal, all-day eating is the name of the game, and everything hinges on top-notch ingredients – including plenty of seasonal Scottish produce. Drop by for breakfast (perhaps a signature ‘panetella’ sandwich with proper kick-start coffee) or call in later for some handmade pasta – spaghettini with palourde clams or orecchiette with cime di rape, anchovies and extra-virgin olive oil. Otherwise, share an antipasti platter or graze on a salad of fennel, orange and goat’s cheese. After that, move on to a ‘primi’ plate of, say, fritto misto or pistachio-crumbed lamb rump, before rounding off with V&C’s bombolone doughnuts, a delectable cake or some gelati. The owners are wine merchants par excellence , and you can access their authoritative cellar by choosing a bottle from the shop; just add £8 to the retail price, and you're good to go. Alternatively, browse the short caffè list from your table; bottles start at £17, and everything is available by the glass.
